(September 22, 2017) Moose Jaw, Sask — Saskatchewan NDP leadership candidate Ryan Meili officially kicked off his campaign in Moose Jaw today with a noon rally with supporters.
“Together, we can turn over a new leaf for the Saskatchewan NDP and transform this province for the better,” Meili said, reaching out to and beyond the party membership, inviting all the people of Saskatchewan, regardless of political stripe “to join us in a new, democratic debate. A debate over who we are, and what we can become.”
In his speech, Meili presented his vision for a healthier Saskatchewan, focusing on seven principles and 21 actions the provincial government can take to improve the lives of Saskatchewan people. The seven principles are a healthy economy, investing upstream, real reconciliation, complete care, rural reconnection, energy leadership, and deepening democracy. Meili was joined on stage by four nominators: Saskatoon Nutana MLA Cathy Sproule, Moose Jaw City Councillor Don Mitchell, community leader Randonn Swan, and Swift Current lawyer Robert Hale.
In her remarks, Sproule spoke to the strength Meili has shown in the Legislature, and of their shared rural roots. “I’m from LaFleche, from a farming family, and Ryan is from the same part of the province—a farm near Courval,” said Sproule. “We both remain deeply committed to rural communities and want to see strong futures for our families and everyone else living and working in Saskatchewan’s heartland.”
A second kick-off event will be held this evening in Saskatoon, at Olympia Restaurant at 7:00 p.m., where Meili will be joined on the stage by author Yann Martel, business owner Mumtaz Naseeb, MLA Cathy Sproule, and Saskatoon Pride Festival Co-chair Danny Papadatos.
